Russian River Valley AVA – The Russian River Valley AVA is perhaps the most renowned of Healdsburg’s AVAs. Known for its cool climate, influenced by the fog rolling in from the Pacific Ocean, this AVA is ideal for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The wines from this region are characterized by their bright acidity, complex flavors, and excellent aging potential. Chalk Hill AVA – Located southeast of Healdsburg, is distinguished by its unique volcanic soils, which impart a distinctive minerality to the wines. The warm climate and well-drained soils of Chalk Hill contribute to the production of wines with intense flavors and excellent structure.
Rockpile AVA – Rockpile AVA covers approximately 15,400 acres, with only about 160 acres planted to vineyards. This high elevation, combined with rocky, well-drained soils and a warm, dry climate, creates ideal conditions for producing concentrated and robust wines.One of the defining characteristics of Rockpile’s terroir is its proximity to Lake Sonoma. The lake acts as a natural air conditioner, moderating temperatures and providing a cooling influence that helps maintain acidity in the grapes.
